Why Pilates?
Trying Pilates can feel intimidating - especially if you are starting later in life, managing pain or returning to movement after a long break.
Let’s look at two common reasons people hesitate to begin:
1) We doubt what we can do
It’s easy to assume Pilates is too advanced or too hard. After all, many people only see snippets online of superfit bodies doing acrobatic moves. Pilates wasn’t created as a performance exercise. It was introduced as a method of rehabilitation - to help people feel better in their bodies, move more freely an build back strength and control.
2) We compare ourselves to others
You might see someone who's been doing Pilates for years and think “I could never do that.” What you see are the highlights, not the starting point. The truth is, the foundational exercises are the heart of the method -they are what help you use Pilates as the step that gets you on the path of building strength with other modalities such as kettlebells, gives you the balance and confidence that lasts. We all start at the same place, learning the building blocks and then adapting those to each exercise we learn.
What makes Pilates different?
Pilates uses a flowing style of movement that improves strength and flexibility while bending and flexing a joint such as bending and straightening your elbow for a bicep curl. While you pull on a strap, one side of your muscle creates the force, the opposite side resists the force and you get this amazing way to support the muscles surrounding the joint. With consistent practice, people gain stamina, confidence, and a new sense of enjoyment in how their bodies move. The style and focus will vary depending on the instructor-and that’s where I come in. Most Pilates exercises can be broken down so you can build up to the full exercise. I will never introduce exercises that don’t suit where you are today. I have taught from 6 to lates 70s; understanding biomechanics of how the body moves means that moving by way of Pilates can be achieved at any age.
